Have you ever been Hongry?! I don’t mean hungry…I mean HONGRY?! (Yes, I meant to spell it like that lol). Well, earlier in the week I was in the middle of working on a project when my stomach decided to inform me that I was ignoring it. So it started growling as if it was angry. I was thankful no one was around because I would have had to excuse myself out of sheer embarrassment of the noises being made. Every second, my stomach got louder, my head started to hurt, and I felt a sharp pain in my side as if my body wanted to verbally scream, “Get UP! FEED ME!”
I think we have all experienced this to some degree. We don’t intentionally prolong our hunger, but it gets to the point where we get desperate for food and we will eat anything that cross our face to satisfy that need. If you haven’t yet experienced this, let me at least warn you to go to the grocery store prior to craving for food.
I couldn’t help but think how this idea of being hungry can apply to many other aspects of our lives. No matter what profession, age, relationship, etc., hunger is a catalyst for action and growth in that area. I believe this to be true and a necessity especially in our daily walk with God. David says in Psalm 63:1 (NLT)…
O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.
There are three things that come to mind when I think about being hungry for God:
- It’s all about YOUR Appetite – It’s great to be hungry for the things of God; however, know that there are different levels to being hungry. God promises in Matthew 5:6 that whoever hungers and thirsts after Him will be satisfied. I love that promise but the Word Reveals more in Philippians 4:19…God will supply all YOUR NEEDS according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. God will satisfy you according to your appetite. That’s why people can be exposed to great things but not grasp them because they didn’t have the appetite for it. Your capacity for greatness is determined by your appetite and hunger for it. Your capacity for more of God is determined by your appetite and hunger for Him. Why would God give you more than you actually hunger for? What’s your appetite for God? Are you hungry and thirsty for Him? Or do you find yourself with no appetite at all?
- With God it’s ALWAYS a 5 course meal – God is such a romancer. He will not only satisfy your need, He sets you up to need Him. Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good…Every good thing that we desire takes time and it’s a process. I would rather sit down and enjoy a nice dinner than try and rush and eat something unhealthy and microwavable. God only wants to give you the best. When you hunger and thirst for Him, He’s going to fill that need one meal at a time. Once you taste and finish one dish, then you find yourself wanting more. God knows what we can and cannot handle. If He gave us everything all at once, it would be beyond our capacity to understand and grow. Are you rushing everything God is giving you? Are you trying to eat so fast you’re not enjoying what’s been given?
- You need a high metabolism – Usually, people with high metabolism are active and have high energy. Their bodies burn off more calories and so they can eat more without gaining any unnecessary weight. James 1:22 states, “But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” When God fills us up and satisfies our hunger it’s our job to digest it and act on it…immediately. Graciously we have received from God and graciously we need to pour it out on others. Let’s not be a couch potato generation where we consume and don’t do anything with all of the information we get. Our challenge is to eat but also do. Are you giving back what God has filled you up with? Or are you just filling up to your own glutton and satisfaction?
There’s no greater hunger than when our soul longs for the Living God. There’s no greater satisfaction when God meets that need and fills us up. My prayer is that we stay hungry for Him, enjoy His goodness, and use what He has given us to bless others. Be Blessed! Be Revealed!
